International Programs and Exchanges Office Fails in Its First Test

Melani Standish - AUI-S Voice's photo
This year, only four students from the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani were accepted by Iraqi Young Leaders and Exchanges Program remarking a failure to the International Programs and Exchanges Office at AUI-S.

While dozens of AUI-S students were accepted by the program while applying by themselves, AUI-S's interference in the applications this year led to a fewer number of participants.

The restrictions put by the IPE office prevented all the EWPLI students from applying for IYELP. AUI-S doesn't have the right to censor its students' participation in programs such as IYLEP, but IPE prevented hundreds of EWPLI students from participation.

The direct role of Melanie Standish, the director of IPE office,  is another cause for the small number of AUI-S students participating in the IYELP.

Melanie Standish was present in the first round of the interviews sent a wrong message to the IYLEP managers.

The International Exchanges Office should let its students free to apply for programs such as IYLEP. While offering help in writing recommendations and giving instrcutions could be helpful to the AUI-S applicants, meddling in the applications process leads to big failures.

You know what, its just a peace of shit, I mean IYLEP

i just hate this woman a lot

a correction, i know that seven students have been chosen as finalists in in both programs of IYLEP which are AED and ADF. so it is not four.

Anonymous said...

she acted as if IYLEP was sponsered by AUI-S. this disappointed many students. she did not allow those experinced professors to write recommendation without seeing her first. i mean, those professors had written thousands of letters of recommendations, why would u give them advise on how to write a recommendation. i hope next time she would only offer help not interfere.

Hmm, let's see. IPE does not even listen to students. Hey IPE, you are just wrong. Why don't you believe it? I swear to GOD you are wrong? just put the money aside, and think logically for a second. These westerners are so poor; they think we easterners are just stupid. Hey, you know what? we all see the wheels turning in you SIMPLE minds. You are being corrupt and you are not aware that every single easterner has suffered from corruption for a very long time in the history. So we have experience in being corrupt and being victims of corruption. So, please do not think that we are not aware of what are you doing. We tired from it. Be careful...you are telling us that we are gonna be the future leaders. well then, I will not be a corrupt leader and so that I must start from AUI-S in the first place. Don't you see the masses in the Freedom Square everyday fighting corruption?

We are very good at recognizing corruption, don't you know? if not, then know!

I don't really know why we have this department at AUI-S? Students can apply for different programs on their own. Why should we pay for somebody(Melanie) which is just googling online and finding programs? And then take control over the applicants and say if you are not applying through university you don't have any chance to get accepted. Why should she be allowed to deprive some students just because they are not meeting with her "Standards." I have applied for different programs including the ones that university call them "highly competitive" outside Melanie's office and got accepted. Dear AUI-S Administrators STOP SAYING THAT WE DON'T HAVE MONEY WHILE YOU ARE HIRING EMPLOYEES JUST TO SIT IN THEIR OFFICES DRINKING COFFEE AND SEARCH ON NET TO FIND PROGRAMS.
WE CAN DO THIS ON OUR OWN.
Excuse me dear readers in order not to get punished I won't write my name.

I strongly agree with you. I think AUI-S is one of the most unintentional universities around the world. They always complain about financial situation. whereas there are a lot of people with a very strange title who are paid with a lot of money and no one has any idea about there job! Miss Melanie is one of them.
This American University of Iraq!!!!!!!!! Mashala
As Kurd says "A big name with a ruined city"!!! nawy gawraw shary weran!!!hahahah

IT is possible that someone on this blog did not get accepted? Is that the reason for this article?

To Student Eye,

Could you tell me, please, how to contact http://auiswatch.blogspot.com/. It is allowed only to people invited. Is there an e-mail to write to?

عشتار العراقية said...

Also I would like to know who the AUI-S honorary Regents are? I know some names: President Talabani, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who else? or where can I find such information?

Anonymous said...

عشتار العراقية begins his investigation!!! What great ability! Ask the blog a question, and then.... POST IT ON THE BLOG! Genius!

عشتار العراقية said...

Dear foreign anon who thinks I am a he,whereas, every Iraqi would know the name is for a she. I asked about the Honorary Regents of AUI-S because I could not find their names anywhere. Of course there are the trustees' names but not the honorary. Perhaps their names are top secret, or they are not so "honorary" as to be announced publicly.

Anyway,I admire your good memory in remembering my previous comment about the investigating thing. This shows that you care.

عشتار العراقية said...

Also dear caring foreign anon. I am sorry, but I do not think that I would ask to publish my investigations on Student Eye, because they are written in Arabic, and I have neither time nor ability to translate into English. Also, I am not sure that the conclusions of my investigations would be welcomed here.

How many students could get free tuition without the money for this interfering program?

عشتار العراقية said...

O.K. I found the Regents, thanks to Michael Rubin.

i know two students in hawler who was accepted for IYLEP and they are in access program at university of kurdistan; same as ewpli. ms. melanie made this rule by her own decision because she doesnt know how to handle ewpli students. dashnye should do this or at the least someone who cares about us should.

An actual email sent to AUIS faculty.

- - - - - - - - - -
Dear Faculty,

This is a gentle reminder and request that you not write recommendations for students who are applying for the Tikvah-Hertog Institute. We have selected 6 semifinalists and have their recommendations already.

Some enterprising students are skipping the AUI-S review process directly applying to the Institute. They are in their rights to apply of course, but the International Programs and Exchanges Office would prefer that AUI-S Faculty and Staff do not facilitate these students’ applications by providing recommendations. They do have the option of requesting someone outside the university to write their recommendation. It is unlikely they will choose students who apply without being recommended by him by the AUI-S faculty member associated with this program.

Best,
Melanie

عشتار العراقية we're jsut teasing you

We should be honest. She is not like that as you described her. She is not responsible for these students who were not accepted by IYLEP. If she is, put your evidence here.

Mr. A

Melanies has ruined everything since she has gotten to AUI-S. We are all very sick of her. She only chooses the students who flatter her. She should not be staying at AUI_S. We kindly ask AUI_S faculty members to kick her out.

Dear Readers,

We have stated this again and again.

We, as the Student Eye bloggers, are very strict about personal attacks. All the comments deleted are deleted for that reason. We don't allow swear and rude words used against anyone.

We welcome your opinions, for or against, but personal attacks are not allowed.

Do you know what freedom of expression means, brother?

Anonymous said...

But your article, itself is a personal attack, you know that well. YOU ARE AFRAID NOW!!! SUCH A COWARD, you are.

this changes nothing.......we ruled by dictators!

Hey fellas: Just a question:

Do you really think we, as students, can change anything at this university????

((BUT please, at first, think about the admin carefully..))

I have heard that AUI-S took money from a bank as a debt for this month's salary for its employees. Please Please Please! do not make AUI-S drown into debt for the sake of having an "International Program Coordinator" and a like big names...
THIS POSITION IS SIMPLY WASTING MONEY out of students' pockets.

It is so unjust to send such e-mail to the proffesors. those people spent thier life studying, and it is a free university, they can write letters to whoever they want. all of them are old enough to decide.
Please AUIS don't let your democratic picture breaks a part in our minds. make yourself a good example for the students.

It is tempting, I am sure, to say things here that you would never say in person. But what is the result?

By posting confidential emails and personal insults, you take attention away from what is a valid concern.

Anonymous said...

This student eye is crap!!!! what about freedom of speech? why do you delete everything? are they saying something bad about you? Quit removing our posts!!!!! you are worse than the administration!!!!

Anonymous said...

Student Eye bloggers, why do you remove posts? personal attacks? your article is a personal attack.

Are you really that stupid?

It is absolutely not Melanie's fault that some students were rejected by IYLEP. Almost all of those students whom Melanie helped in filling up the applications have been accepted. They get rejected when they had a face to face meeting with the IYLEP Team. So, it is not Melane's fault again. It is their fault because they did't do well in their interviews.Personaly, her comments were very benificial for me when I had an interview with the MEPI. After I followed her directions, I figured out that the team wanted exactly what I said to them.

why blame Melanie??? IYLEP has absolutely nothing to do with AUI-S. Melanie actually is a person who really likes to help students. She tries to make whatever you do look perfect. It is a little bit annoying but it is for your benefit. It is a shame that she is being attacked just for being helpeful.

I strongly recommend her to do APPOLOGIZE for being corrupted!!!!!!!!!!! This is the right path she MUST take!!!!!

Anonymous said...

First of all IYLEP is not a university associated program, second of all the office of international exchange programs is there to help students and has no influence on IYLEP. and I strongly recommend that you guys apologize to Melanie, the university is not responsible for the incompetence of the rejected students, also the IYLEP is believed to have a corrupted staff.

Anonymous said...

And we will accept her apology the same way that South Africans did.

kak Mahdy don't flatter!!!! how do u know that the interview was face to face with the IYLEP team????? it's not true!!! MY friend says that the interview was with Milanie and another mad guy named Bashar who didn't know how to speak! who wrote the questions and read to the students!!! The questions is that why she interfered?????? what kind of hepl has she offered???

She should be punished by firing at AUI-S if she will not appologize for not being helpful as necessary as she must be for these who are selected but not passed the interview because she participated in the interviews.
Some good English speakers are not chosen, however, some terrible English speakers are chosen.
I would like to tell her to answer this question; What was her business in the In-Person interviews??? To help??? which help??? most students are fired from the program!!!

what makes me feel borin is Melanie, and what makes me feel more borring is James when he defends him, and what makes me more and more borring are some idiot students who defend them just for their interests.
If your mind works properly and read her letter to faculties, you will realize how she tricks some of us!!
so guys plz plz plz stop flattering abd be concious!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear blogger plz plz don't be too strict and stupid in removing the comments; i got crazy of you.

To the owners and readers of this blog:

Please be fully aware that threats like the one posted above will not be tolerated at this university, nor will any forum which encourages or condones them.

The university has always valued free and open reasoned debate, but what has happened here has clearly crossed the line. What appears above can scarcely be called reasoned debate.

I urge everyone involved with this line of "reasoning" to reconsider the approach being taken here, and being condoned here by The Student Eye blog.

I leave it to you, for now, to police yourselves. Know this: Threats against the faculty and staff of AUI-S will be taken very seriously, and will not be tolerated in any way.

I pay $10.000 to AUI-S every year, and studying at that university is just a usual studying. I want my university to do something for me that it has nevr done in Iraq before like inviting us to the U.S.A. I think this is not too much because this will take them only the salary of one week that they get. working a week voluntarily for this kind of respectful and hard-working students will make the professors more respected and this will not be forgetable!!!
If they want to do it, they can do, but if they don't want to do it, they cannot.

Anonymous said...

I'm still waiting for her to make some explanation about her aweful work she is doing at AUI-S, especially with IYLEP. I'm serious!!!!!!!!!!!!!
