AUI-S: In the wake of the political Turmoil

Bahman Abdulrahman
by:Bahman Abdulrahman
Can the American university of Iraq-Sulaimani stand on its feet alone? What will happen if the present political conflicts push its Board of Trustees to flee the country? . Will its American faculty members risk their lives for the sake of young “future Iraqi leaders”?
Is it not the time for AUI-S to think about other “sources” of “money”? These are tricky questions of the moment. We must ask, so as not to be amazed when the university warps its business here, or when we receive a message from the Student Affair’s office, bidding farewell for an undefined time.
Recent conflicts shock every one, mostly high ranked officials. Iraqis pay any attention to the fragile security concerns. They drew their conclusion, which is no more suppression or no suppressive leaders. Iraqis are aware of wasting their national wealth which being benevolently given to charity organizations while Iraqi are starving or spent on weapons aimed at Iraqis. “No” for leaders and a complete state of rejection is taking over Iraq. Signs suggest huge changes in future Iraqi forerunners which is equivalent to lose of so many “strategic projects”. Then many of our wishes are at stake.
American University of Iraq-Sulaimani was founded by Barham Salih, the Prime Minister of KRG, whose tenure is approaching the rid lines due to corruption and misadministration of powers. There are many who are accusing Mr. Salih of spending their wealth on its strategic project “AUI-S is a huge strategic academic project”, Barham Salih told Nighash newspaper in mid-2010, but what will happen when he is gone?
Thus far on many occasions the university couldn’t escape from the bondage of its Board of Trustees, and it is fully depending on their offers and policies. In other words the university’s lack of cash is its huge weakness. Where the funds come and spent on what is not of our concerns, but the moment the university runs out of cash is of a big concern.
“Keep yourselves away from the market because it not safe” this is what the university informs of its members. Seemingly, either the university is socked or refusing to admit its unpleasant condition. Again, I rather want to ask what is the university’s plan incase its Iraqi supporters lost their privileges? Can AUI-S stand on its feet all by its own?

I can't believe with writing like this you are in the academic program.

AUI-S probably cannot stand on its own if the worst will happen so why don't you go to another school now just in case it will?

This blog does not represent us. One the writing is bad. Two, anyone with this opinion (I mean if you can understand it) should not be at AUI-S in the very first place.

I am investigating AUI-S. The names at The board of trustees tell everything. Now do you think that the killing of Basil Al Rahim, who has some connection to the University, thru the Iraq Foundation, and Asiacell, has anything to do with the corruption at the AUI-S?

Good article. AUI-S is funded almost exclusively through Barham and the KRG. In other words, it is an extension of the government and local "business interests." Students and faculty should be concerned about this situation. The US government is not going to step and start funding AUI-S, esp. given all of the financial problems it is currently having.

Dear whoever is investigating AUI-S,

Please email me. I have a letter that I think you might find interesting. markgrueter@gmail.com

Anonymous,

You seem to enjoy spreading lies about me, yet you don't have the courage or decency to even identify yourself. So, why should anyone believe or listen to you?

The letter I was referring to is an email from the AUI-S provost trying to have an article critical of AUI-S removed from a major U.S. media website. Much like its sponsor the KRG, AUI-S is keen on shutting down free speech.

Listen to me very carefully. The Mark Greuter above is NOT Mark Greuter. Apparently the KRG has infiltrated this blog. عشتار العراقية, if you really want the truth, you have to meet me in person at the Olive Garden in New Rochelle, New York. If you can maybe pick up the tab on some cheese bread, I have another letter wich may interest you.
