In a letter to Dr. Barham Salih, the Board of Trustees, the AUI-S provost, and the AUI-S Faculty and Staff, 200 AUI-S students expressed their anger and anxiety at the wrong decision made to remove Sulaimani from university's name.
This is the letter:
Dear Dr. Barham Ahmed Salih, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees,
Dears All Members of the Board of Trustees,
Dear. Dr. Athanasios Moulakis, AUI-S Provost,
Dear AUI-S Faculty and Staff,
We, as the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani, who have signed this declaration, protest the removal of Sulaimani from the official name of the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani. While we strongly believe that
the decision is wrong and unjustified, we think that there is still time to correct this step.
This baseless decision angered all the AUI-S community including our respectful faculty. The AUI-S community was not previously informed about the decision which came as a shock to all of us.
This big and wrong decision is a sign for the problems this university has in decision making. We ask you to put an end to this chaotic situation where decisions are made on daily bases without anyone’s knowledge.
Sulaimani deserves to be honored by being mentioned in the formal name, because this city has offered a lot to each and everyone in the AUI-S community.
We also emphasize that the AUI-S community has a united stand in this issue. This unwise decision could endanger the peaceful coexistence between the different ethnic and religious groups, but we will never let that happen. We are all brothers and sister at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani for the sake of a more
democratic, liberal and prosperous Iraq.
We are waiting your decision to reverse the decision
